APA: QSEN Website (Nursing)

Citation Generators - A Warning!

There are several free online citation generators that will make your Works Cited or Reference pages for you. Beware that these do not always format your sources correctly (there is a reason they are free). If you choose to use one of these tools, use the tabs at the top of the screen to check that they are correct before submitting your assignment. You don't want to lose points on your assignment because the AI generators were wrong!

APA QSEN Website

Follow these rules for your QSEN papers. This is the format that your nursing instructors are following.

  • Since there is no named individual listed as an author, we will use the QSEN Institute as the author. You will do this when a group or organization is responsible for creating the information on the website. When you use an organization as the author you capitalize it the formal way, as it is listed on the website.
  • If there is no date with the article you are using, DO NOT use the copyright year at the bottom of the page. That applies to the whole website and is not necessarily the date your information was written. You will use (n.d.), which means no date, in place of a year.
  • Article/webpage titles are written sentence style, which means you capitalize like you are writing a sentence. Capitalize the first word and any proper nouns in the title. Titles are also italicized.
    • Since QSEN is an acronym, you will keep all of those letters capitalized.
  • Since the name of the group/organization is also the name of the website, you don't have to list the website name after the title of the article/webpage.
  • Always include the link that takes you straight to the page/article you are using.
    • If you use multiple pages/articles on one site (they will have different links) you need to cite them separately. Each one will have its own line on your reference page and will have its own in-text citation.
  • Note where periods or commas separate pieces of information. There is no period after the webpage link.
Reference Page:

Direct Quote: Include the paragraph number where you found your quote.

Start at the top of the webpage and count the paragraphs until you get to your quote. For the charts on the webpage, count a row as a paragraph. See the screenshot and example below.
